What to look out for when picking a property inspector

admin January 25, 2017

Have you finally found that house to call home? We know it’s an exciting time when you’re purchasing a house but it’s also a time to sit back and think about having a building inspection carried out. Buying property is a big decision and it follows with a big price tag, so getting a property inspector to examine the house will be a smart decision. If you compare the price of the house to what an inspection costs, it really is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

While it’s a wise decision to have a building inspection carried out, you may not be aware that the Victorian building inspection industry is not regulated. What this means is that you may be employing an inspector, who lacks the qualifications and/or on-site experience to do a good job. This could result in defects and issues in the house being missed by their untrained eye, which may ultimately mean a dip into your pockets later down the road.

So, if you would like an inspection carried out but you’re not too sure where to start, we have put together a list of questions to help you select a trustworthy property inspection company:

  • Do they employ Registered Builders or Accredited Architects?
  • What experience do these inspectors hold?
  • How many inspections has this company carried out?
  • How long has this company been carrying out inspections?
  • Can you attend the inspection and will you receive a verbal summary?
  • What is their turnaround time from inspection to receiving the report?
  • Can they provide you with a sample report?
